Leaders from the Northern region of Fiji have expressed their backing for the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the next President of Fiji. This support comes following Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s announcement on Tuesday that Ratu Naiqama is the government’s nominee for the position.

Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, the Tui Nadogo, confirmed his support for the government’s nominee but emphasized the importance of involving chiefs in the appointment process. He stated that while they respect the government’s decision and recognize its constitutional authority, it is essential for the Great Council of Chiefs to have a voice to ensure that the views of the iTaukei people are represented.

Similarly, Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, endorsed the idea of selecting a president who embodies justice and righteousness. While he did not publicly align himself with the government’s nominee, he acknowledged the need for national unity across all districts and provinces in Fiji. Ratu Maivalili expressed that the citizens deserve a leader who embodies equality and noted his appreciation for the efforts of the outgoing President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, who has led the nation over the past four years.

He wished Ratu Katonivere well in his future endeavors and stressed the importance of a president who fears God and respects the Christian principles upon which the nation is founded. Ratu Maivalili reiterated the need for a visionary leader to guide Fiji towards a stable future, despite any differences in leadership styles compared to past presidents.

Attempts to reach Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for a comment were unsuccessful.
