The Labasa football club, known as Northpole, celebrated a significant victory at the 2024 Cecil’s National Club Championship (NCCC), returning home with a prize of $4,000. In an intense final held at the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) grounds, they overcame Buiduna with a score of 6-3.
The first half was a closely contested match, ending in a 2-2 tie. However, the momentum shifted in the second half when Melvin Mani put Northpole ahead in the 55th minute, followed shortly by Christopher Wasasala, who scored his second goal at the 61st minute mark. Additional goals were contributed by Eparama Moraica and Mohammed Arbaz, securing Northpole’s victory.
Despite the defeat, Buiduna made history by reaching their first NCCC final. Their journey to the finals was commendable, starting with a 2-1 win over Rewa’s Nakasi Police, followed by a narrow 1-0 victory against Lautoka’s Rivals, and a 1-1 draw with Nadroga’s Downtown in their final pool match, which guaranteed their place in the final. For their efforts, Buiduna took home $1,000.
This exciting event highlights the competitiveness of local football, showcasing the talent and determination of clubs in Fiji. Northpole’s win not only bolsters their reputation but also adds enthusiasm to future tournaments. Buiduna’s achievement in reaching the finals serves as inspiration for other clubs, demonstrating that with hard work and dedication, triumph is possible in the world of sports.
