Noco Secondary School recently showcased its athletic talent by sending 60 athletes to an inter-school athletics competition held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The event saw participation from five schools, including Nakasi High, Nabua Secondary, Davuilevu Methodist, and Rewa Secondary.

Principal Jone Tuitavua expressed the school’s desire to give students more exposure ahead of the zone meet and the Fiji Finals. He noted the importance of building friendships among students from different schools, emphasizing that most participants come from village backgrounds and need guidance on what to expect in competitive environments.

This year, Noco aims to improve on last year’s performance, where they did not secure any medals but had eight students participating. Tuitavua highlighted that their goal is to advance further, planning to send around 20 to 30 students to the zones and ideally 10 to the Fiji Finals, contingent on qualification.

Challenges such as limited access to training facilities hinder smaller schools like Noco from fully tapping into their athletic potential. Tuitavua mentioned that many schools lack proper grounds for meets and training, which underscores the necessity of bringing as many athletes as possible to events to foster competitive spirit.

At the conclusion of the inter-schools competition, Noco Secondary finished fourth, earning two gold, six silver, and two bronze medals. This achievement reflects the growth and enthusiasm among their athletes.

The collaborative spirit seen among participating schools resonates with a broader trend of cooperation in Fiji’s educational sports sector. Nakasi High School’s principal previously called for combined inter-house competitions to enhance competitiveness while sharing resources. This initiative not only enriches the experience for students but also strengthens camaraderie amongst schools, paving the way for a more unified approach to athletics.

Through events like this, schools are nurturing the talents of young athletes, fostering future generations who might excel nationally. The growing interest and support for school sports may lead to a revitalized athletic culture within educational institutions, promoting both skill development and community spirit.
