The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has released a public advisory emphasizing the importance for all travelers entering Fiji to adhere to strict biosecurity and health measures, particularly in light of the potential introduction of the Nipah Virus (NiV). This advisory highlights concerns for travelers arriving from affected regions, with a particular focus on West Bengal in India.

In the advisory, BAF mandates that travelers comply with biosecurity protocols at all entry points into the country. Upon arrival, individuals are required to honestly declare all plant and animal products on their Passenger Arrival Card. BAF has made it clear that failing to declare such items could lead to penalties under Fiji’s biosecurity laws.

Additionally, the authority cautions against bringing fresh fruits, vegetables, or animal products from high-risk areas, noting that these items may be subject to confiscation or necessitate an official import permit. The consumption or importation of raw date palm sap or any products that may be contaminated by fruit bats is strictly forbidden to mitigate risks.

To bolster safety, enhanced border surveillance measures have been instituted at Nadi and Nausori International Airports. Travelers arriving from regions with reported cases of the Nipah virus may be subjected to specialized health screenings and additional checks.

BAF recommends that travelers monitor their health closely for 14 to 21 days post-travel. If symptoms such as fever, headaches, or respiratory issues arise, they are urged to seek prompt medical attention and inform healthcare providers of their recent travel history.

This advisory reflects Fiji’s ongoing commitment to protecting public health and reinforcing its biosecurity measures in the face of emerging health threats. The proactive stance taken by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji underscores the importance of vigilance and cooperation from travelers to keep the nation safe from potential health risks.
