Fiji has been deemed safe from any immediate threats posed by the Nipah virus outbreak, according to Penioni Ravunawa, the Assistant Minister for Health. During a media briefing held in conjunction with World Leprosy Day celebrations at the Twomey Hospital in Tamavua, Suva, Ravunawa emphasized that health authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have robust surveillance systems in place.

“Currently, there is no threat for Fiji. Our surveillance department is keeping a close eye on the spread of that outbreak,” he stated. The Nipah virus, known for its high infectivity and severe health implications, has raised concerns globally given recent reports of cases in other regions.

Ravunawa highlighted the advancements in Fiji’s health infrastructure that have enhanced its capabilities to detect and respond to emerging infectious diseases, particularly following the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. He reassured the public that Fiji’s Centre for Disease Control is equipped with the necessary tools and expertise to identify potential viral threats if they were to enter the country.

“Should any virus similar to COVID filter in, we will be ready to identify it,” Ravunawa added. He noted that ongoing surveillance is crucial in tracking outbreaks across the Asia-Pacific region, ensuring timely responses to any developments.

The Minister for Health maintains active engagement with regional health updates, and Ravunawa confirmed that the public would be notified promptly if there are any changes in the situation. “Once significant numbers are identified for Fiji, precautions will be communicated,” he said.

For now, residents can feel reassured, as Ravunawa stated, “It is safe right now.” This proactive approach to health surveillance reflects a commitment to public safety and preparedness amidst global health challenges.
