Eswa Nadan, affectionately known as “Ninja,” remains a prominent figure in Fijian football four decades after becoming a household name. Recently, he was honored by the Fiji Football Association, being inducted into the Fiji FA Legends Programme on December 1st.
At 58 years old, Nadan, who now lives in Sydney and runs a successful air-conditioning and refrigeration business, continues to share his passion for football. He began his journey in the sport during primary school in 1977, recalling his first significant moment of scoring the winning goal for Nadi Sangam Primary in their Inter Primary competition.
In an interview, Nadan reflected on how football has profoundly shaped his life, providing valuable experiences and helping him develop a strong character. Although he initially focused on academics during high school, encouragement from friends led him to participate in village team matches. His commitment grew as he contributed to the success of the Navo sports club, leading them to unbeaten seasons and promotions through the divisions.
Nadan’s breakthrough came when he caught the attention of the late Nadi Team Manager, Mohammed Saleem, which led to his debut match for Nadi in 1987, where he made an immediate impact by scoring against Suva. Notable achievements include being a crucial part of the team that ended Lautoka’s remarkable 15-match unbeaten streak, which remains one of his proudest moments.
Although injuries sidelined him from professional play, Nadan transitioned to coaching, guiding youth teams and helping the West U15 side secure a victory against New Zealand in 1997. He actively participated in football development in Australia after relocating there in 2001, forming the Nadi Veterans Club and leading the AuFFI All Stars.
Throughout his endeavors, Nadan emphasizes the importance of community through football. He celebrated his recent induction with family, acknowledging their unwavering support. He expressed his desire to unite the Fijian diaspora in Australia through the sport, hoping that initiatives like the upcoming U16 competition will foster youth talent and bring families together.
