Eswa Nadan “Ninja,” a respected figure in local football for the past 40 years, remains dedicated to the sport and has recently been honored by the Fiji Football Association. The 58-year-old former Nadi player, currently based in Sydney, Australia, operates a successful air-conditioning and refrigeration business and was inducted into the Fiji FA Legends Programme on December 1, 2024.
Nadan’s journey in football began in primary school in 1977, where he quickly developed a passion for the game, scoring the winning goal for his team during an inter-primary competition. Although he initially prioritized his studies in high school, peer pressure nudged him towards playing for his village team, Navo Sports Club, where they achieved remarkable success. Through hard work and commitment, Nadan rose to prominence in local football.
His significant break occurred when he was invited to train with the Nadi district team, joining notable players during that era. He made his debut in 1987, scoring in his first match against Suva, and contributed to Nadi’s victory over Lautoka—a team that had a 15-match unbeaten streak—by scoring the winning goal in a match that held special significance due to the event coinciding with the Sugar Festival.
Throughout his career, Nadan formed a formidable partnership with fellow player Rusiate Waqan, while citing former Nadroga defender Abraham Watkins as his most challenging opponent. His playing career ended in 1994 due to injuries, but he transitioned into coaching youth teams and advancing through various coaching positions, ultimately becoming involved in the Nadi Veterans Club in Australia.
Currently, Nadan serves as the CEO of Australia Fiji Football Incorporated and was recently appointed Head Coach of the AuFFI All Stars for the Pacific Cup, where he is focused on nurturing young talent within the community. He emphasizes the importance of family support and expresses a desire to unite the Fijian diaspora in Australia through football.
Nadan is optimistic about the future of football in Fiji, particularly with the introduction of a youth competition that allows younger players to shine and engage their families in the sport.
This article not only highlights Nadan’s impressive football journey but also underscores his commitment to fostering community and youth engagement through sport, providing a positive outlook on the evolution of football in Fiji and among Fijian communities abroad.
