Eswa Nadan, popularly known as “Ninja,” has been a notable figure in Fijian football for over four decades and continues to contribute to the sport. Recently, the Fiji Football Association recognized his dedication by inducting him into the Fiji FA Legends Programme during a ceremony held in Nadi on December 1. Now 58 years old, Nadan lives in Sydney, Australia, where he manages a thriving air-conditioning and refrigeration company.
Nadan’s journey in football began in primary school in 1977, where he fondly recalls scoring the winning goal in an inter-primary competition for Nadi Sangam Primary. Although he initially focused on academics in high school, his friends coaxed him into playing for the village team, which led to an impressive unbeaten season and promotion to a higher division. This experience fueled his commitment to the sport, and with determination, he trained rigorously and honed his skills.
His impressive abilities caught the attention of Nadi’s district team manager, leading to his debut with Nadi in 1987 against Suva, where he scored a pivotal goal. Throughout his career, Nadan achieved numerous milestones, including being part of the team that ended Lautoka’s 15-match unbeaten streak, a moment he cherishes.
Despite his early retirement in 1994 due to injuries, Nadan transitioned to coaching, leading youth teams and guiding them to success, including the West U15 side’s victory over New Zealand in 1997. After moving to Australia in 2001, he founded the Nadi Veterans Club, actively participating in veterans’ competitions and recently serving as head coach of the Australia Fiji Football Incorporated (AuFFI) All Stars.
Having been married to Shalini Nadan and being a proud father to two children, Nadan draws inspiration and strength from his family. He celebrated his induction into the Fiji FA Legends Club surrounded by loved ones, a moment he calls unforgettable. Looking to the future, he aims to unite the Fijian community in Australia through football.
Nadan enthusiastically supports the introduction of an Under-16 competition by the Pacific Cup Committee, seeing it as a tremendous opportunity for youth to showcase their talents. He advocates for an active lifestyle post-football, encouraging his peers to prioritize their well-being.
In summary, Eswa Nadan’s remarkable football journey continues, showcasing his passion for the sport and dedication to fostering a united Fijian community through football. His story exemplifies the positive impact of sports on individuals and communities, inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams while embracing their heritage.
