Nineteen individuals were taken to Lautoka Hospital following a traffic accident involving a bus and a twin cab vehicle in Vitogo, located just outside Lautoka. According to police reports, the incident occurred around 2:45 PM when the twin cab exited Vitogo Road and collided with the bus that was en route from Lautoka to Ba. The bus was on its way to Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki to catch the 6 PM Goundar Shipping vessel heading towards Natovi and Vanua Levu.
Sherin Nisha, one of the passengers on the Goundar Shipping bus, expressed her concern regarding the accident, attributing it to what she described as a “silly mistake” on the part of the twin cab driver. She remarked that the driver should have waited a moment for the bus to pass before pulling onto the road. Nisha noted the driver emerged abruptly from the junction, calling into question whether he was aware of the approaching bus.
The collision was significant enough that the bus flipped over and landed on its side against the twin cab. Both the driver of the twin cab and the 18 passengers aboard the bus received medical attention at Lautoka Hospital.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of road safety and awareness. It underscores the need for drivers to exercise caution, especially in areas of heavy traffic. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and it is hoped that all individuals involved will recover swiftly.
In summary, this accident highlights the ongoing challenge of road safety, and the community’s collective hope is for a future where such incidents can be prevented through increased awareness and education.
