Roneel Sami, the president of Nadi’s nightclub operators and owner of Ice-Bar Nadi, has called for a thorough reassessment of existing rules and regulations governing nightclubs, following a troubling incident involving three Australian airline crew members who were reportedly victims of theft and sexual assault at a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi.
Mr. Sami emphasized the need for collaboration among nightclub operators, government officials, and other stakeholders to enhance safety measures for patrons. He voiced concerns that such incidents could tarnish Fiji’s reputation as a tourist destination. “Although this incident is unfortunate, it is just one of many events that occur beyond nightclub walls. When nightclubs close at 1 am, it results in crowds waiting outside for taxis, making them more vulnerable,” he explained.
He suggested that extending nightclub operating hours to 5 am could alleviate some of these issues, providing patrons with greater control over their departure times and reducing congestion outside. Mr. Sami noted that nightclubs should provide a secure environment for enjoyment, contrasting this with the challenges posed by intoxicated individuals wandering the streets post-closure.
Sami highlighted that there are currently 14 nightclubs in Martintar, yet many lack adequate parking, compelling patrons to navigate dark streets while searching for transportation at night. He criticized the limited availability of taxis after club hours and called attention to the lack of police presence to ensure safety around the venues after hours.
Furthermore, he urged the Nadi Town Council to reevaluate the registration of nightclubs that don’t meet essential safety standards. In response, Saliceni Raiwalui, Chair of the Nadi Town Council’s Special Administrator, acknowledged the issue, expressing sympathy for the victims and affirming the council’s commitment to enhancing safety measures for both tourists and locals. “This incident serves as a wake-up call to reassess our safety protocols,” Mr. Raiwalui stated.
This incident may serve as a crucial turning point for Nadi’s nightlife, potentially leading to improved regulations that ensure a safer environment for all. It highlights the importance of community collaboration to create enjoyable yet safe entertainment experiences, reinforcing a commitment to protecting both locals and tourists alike.
