John Jeong Choon-Sik, president of the White House Nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, recently highlighted that nightclubs should be regarded as venues intended for mature adults, rather than places for children. During a community meeting with Nadi Police at the Nadi Town Council Chamber, he addressed concerns about the potential negative impacts of nightclubs on youth.
Choon-Sik emphasized that the true negative influences often arise not from the nightlife industry, but from the behaviors exhibited by family members in the home. He stated that adults frequently model behaviors for children through activities such as drinking and using inappropriate language, leading kids to imitate these actions. “The responsibility lies with parents and relatives,” Choon-Sik asserted.
He called for a cooperative effort involving families, churches, and educational institutions to offer better guidance for young people. This plea was underscored by disturbing statistics from Saint Giles Hospital, which reported over 7,000 young individuals in their care this year, indicating a critical need for community support systems.
Choon-Sik also contended that nightclubs are vital to the economy and should not be shut down because of the actions of a minority. He praised local law enforcement’s continuous presence, which Acting Deputy Police Commander West, Esira Bari, noted during the meeting, underlining the importance of police and military operations in ensuring community safety.
By reframing the narrative surrounding nightlife, Choon-Sik’s comments invite a more collaborative approach to addressing youth issues. Collective responsibility among families and institutions can lead to more positive influences on the younger generation while preserving the cultural and economic significance of nightclubs. This optimistic view encourages a united effort to foster a safer and more supportive environment for youth, promoting their healthy development amid the nightlife scene.
