Nightclubs Blamed, But Are Parents the Real Culprits?

John Jeong Choon-Sik, president of White House Nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, recently emphasized at a community meeting that nightclubs are venues meant for mature adults rather than children. This discussion came in response to concerns about the potential negative influences of such establishments on young individuals.

Mr. Choon-Sik acknowledged the criticism that nightclubs often face, stating that misconceptions lead many to believe these environments adversely affect youth. He argued that the real sources of negative influence are often parents and family members. Citing prevalent behaviors shared on social media where adults exhibit drinking, smoking, and inappropriate language, he suggested that these actions encourage children to emulate them.

He advocated for a concerted effort from families, churches, and the education system to play an active role in guiding and mentoring young people. Mr. Choon-Sik pointed out a significant issue highlighted by doctors at Saint Giles Hospital, who reported caring for over 7,000 young individuals this year. He remarked that the economic contributions of nightclubs are vital to the country, asserting that closing such venues due to the actions of a few would be an unwise decision.

Additionally, he praised law enforcement’s ongoing efforts, which were noted by Acting Deputy Police Commander West, Esira Bari, during the meeting. Mr. Choon-Sik stressed the importance of police and military presence in maintaining community security.

This perspective sheds light on the importance of understanding the multifaceted influences that shape youth behavior. It also highlights the need for community cooperation in fostering a safer environment for children. While challenges exist, there is a hopeful message about the role that families, alongside supportive institutions, can play in guiding the younger generation towards positive choices.
