Roneel Sami, the president of Nadi’s nightclub operators and owner of Ice-Bar Nadi, has called for a thorough review of existing rules and regulations to enhance the safety of nightclubs following a troubling incident that reportedly involved three Australian airline crew members. The alleged event, which took place at a nightclub in Martintar, included claims of theft and sexual assault against the crew members.

Sami emphasized the need for nightclub operators to work collaboratively with government authorities and other stakeholders to reassess how nightclubs are run, particularly in light of this incident. He voiced concerns over the potential negative impact such events could have on tourism in Fiji, underscoring that although this is an unfortunate case, it is not isolated.

“This incident has unfortunately painted a negative image for tourism in Fiji,” Sami remarked. He pointed out that with nightclubs closing early, at 1 am, many patrons—including tourists—are left waiting outside for taxis. He suggested that extending operating hours to 5 am, as was the case in the past, could help mitigate potential risks by allowing patrons to leave at staggered times, reducing crowding and making taxis easier to access.

Sami highlighted that the timing of the airline crew’s departure, combined with the large crowd outside the nightclub, may have increased their vulnerability. He stated that while nightclubs are designed as safe and enjoyable environments, the current situation leaves many intoxicated individuals wandering the streets, which can be disruptive and hazardous.

Additionally, he raised concerns regarding the 14 nightclubs in the Martintar area and the inadequate parking facilities available to patrons. Sami explained that many venues lack proper parking, forcing patrons to walk on dark streets while searching for available taxis, which are often limited during late hours. He alleged that this scenario contributed to the unfortunate incident involving the airline crew.

Sami also criticized the lack of police presence around nightclubs during operating hours. He stated that both insufficient parking and inadequate police patrols played a role in the incident. He urged the Nadi Town Council to reconsider the registration of nightclubs that do not comply with basic safety standards.

In response, Saliceni Raiwalui, the Chair of the Nadi Town Council’s Special Administrator, expressed sympathy for the victims and acknowledged the gravity of the situation. He noted that the incident has served as a crucial wake-up call for the community to reevaluate safety measures for both tourists and locals.

This situation presents an opportunity for stakeholders in Nadi to come together and address the necessary reforms for a safer nightlife experience. With thoughtful coordination between nightclub operators, local authorities, and law enforcement, there is potential for creating a lively yet secure atmosphere that preserves the reputation of Fiji as a welcoming tourist destination.

By fostering a safer environment for patrons, it is possible to enhance the overall nightlife experience in Nadi, positively influencing tourism and community wellbeing.
