Roneel Sami, the president of nightclub operators in Nadi and the owner of Ice-Bar Nadi, has called for a re-evaluation of existing regulations governing nightclubs to enhance patron safety. His remarks came after an alarming incident involving three Australian airline crew members, who were allegedly victims of theft and sexual assault at a nightclub in Martintar, Nadi.
Sami emphasized the need for collaboration between nightclub operators, the government, and other stakeholders to address safety concerns comprehensively. He noted that such incidents harm the image of Fiji as a tourist destination, despite being just one occurrence among others that happen outside nightlife venues.
One of Sami’s key points was the operational hours of nightclubs. He argued that extending closing time from 1 am to 5 am would not only allow patrons greater flexibility in leaving but would also reduce crowd congestion outside, thereby making taxis more accessible. He suggested that the timing of the crew’s departure, coupled with the large number of people waiting for transport, may have heightened their vulnerability.
Sami highlighted that nightclubs are intended to provide a controlled environment for revelers, and he expressed concern over intoxicated individuals wandering the streets and creating disturbances. He also raised issues regarding the lack of parking facilities for patrons, particularly around 14 nightclubs in Martintar, forcing individuals to search for taxis on poorly lit streets.
The absence of police presence in the area during late hours was another concern, with Sami suggesting that this lack of oversight, combined with inadequate infrastructure, contributed to the incident involving the airline crew. He urged the Nadi Town Council to reassess the registration of nightclubs that fail to meet safety requirements.
In response, Saliceni Raiwalui, the Chair of the Nadi Town Council’s Special Administrator, expressed sympathy for the victims and acknowledged the situation as a critical moment for reassessing safety measures for both tourists and locals.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive safety measures in nightlife environments. By addressing these concerns collaboratively, local authorities and nightclub operators can work towards creating a safer and more enjoyable atmosphere for all patrons, potentially enhancing the appeal of Nadi as a tourist hotspot.
In summary, the call for enhanced safety measures amidst broader issues in nightlife is a hopeful step towards improving both the image and experience of tourism in Fiji.
