A violent altercation occurred outside a nightclub in Suva early Sunday morning, igniting extensive discussions on social media regarding accountability. The confrontation reportedly involved intoxicated members of the Vusu Raiders Rugby League Club from Namatakula, Nadroga, who were allegedly assaulted by the nightclub’s bouncers.

As a result of the incident, six players sustained injuries and required medical attention—three were admitted to the Sigatoka Hospital, while the other three were taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH). According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu, two of the players at CWMH remained unconscious, while one was in stable condition.

Akuila Masi, the manager of the Vusu Raiders, decided against filing a formal complaint, citing that the matter is currently under police investigation. However, he did express strong disapproval of the bouncers’ actions, labeling their conduct as excessive and unwarranted. “The way they handled the situation by smashing chairs on them and kicking one of them with a safety boot is uncalled for,” Mr. Masi stated, while also urging for privacy for the victims and their families during this sensitive time.

The incident may pose challenges for the Suva Retailers Association’s proposal to extend nightclub operating hours. Despite this setback, Association president Jitesh Patel remains optimistic about the police’s ability to conduct a thorough investigation and has plans to submit a formal application for extended hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve next year.
