A violent altercation outside a nightclub in Suva early Sunday morning has ignited intense discussions on social media regarding accountability. The incident involved intoxicated members of the Vusu Raiders Rugby League Club from Namatakula, Nadroga, who were reportedly assaulted by nightclub bouncers.
As a result of the brawl, six players required hospitalization, with three treated at the Sigatoka Hospital and the other three at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH). Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu reported that two of the players at CWMH remained unconscious, while the third is currently stable.
Akuila Masi, the club’s manager, opted not to file a formal complaint, citing an ongoing police investigation. However, he condemned the bouncers’ extreme measures during the incident, criticizing their actions of attacking the players with chairs and kicking one of them with a safety boot. Masi requested privacy for the victims and their families while the investigation proceeds.
This incident could impact the Suva Retailers Association’s plans to request an extension of nightclub hours, particularly as they aim to submit a formal application for the upcoming Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve celebrations next year. Association president Jitesh Patel expressed confidence in the police’s ability to conduct a thorough investigation, despite not being aware of the brawl at the time as he was in the Western Division.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and responsible behavior in nightlife environments. As investigations unfold, there is hope that this incident will lead to improved practices within nightclubs to prevent future altercations and ensuring a safe atmosphere for all patrons.
