Australian actress Nicole Kidman reaffirmed her commitment to advancing gender equality in the film industry during an exclusive event at the Cannes Film Festival, emphasizing her continued advocacy since her initial pledge in 2017. Speaking at the Women in Motion dinner, Kidman expressed her determination to support female filmmakers, having collaborated with 27 female directors over the past eight years. “I’m just an advocate and want to continue to keep moving forward with that… so it ain’t over,” she stated, highlighting the significance of protecting and nurturing the talent of women in cinema.

The event featured several prominent figures, including popstar Charli XCX, Irish actor Paul Mescal, and director Guillermo del Toro, demonstrating the entertainment industry’s ongoing dialogue about gender equity. Kidman’s commitment aligns with the broader initiative led by luxury group Kering, which has sought to increase female representation in film since establishing Women in Motion in 2015.

Throughout the festival, the statistics illustrate a slow progression in gender equality, with women directors composing only 13.6% of the top 100 box office films in the U.S. from 2015 to 2024, a modest increase from 7.5%. At this year’s Cannes, out of the 22 films in competition, seven are directed by women, including notable contributions from Julia Ducournau, a historic Palme d’Or winner.

Director Coralie Fargeat commented on the need for substantial change within the industry, stating, “We really need to keep making huge changes and not cosmetic changes.” These sentiments are echoed by Kidman’s efforts, as she seeks not just participation but genuine empowerment for women in film.

This event serves as a beacon of hope for the future of gender equality in cinema, fostering collaborative efforts and showcasing the progress made while recognizing the challenges that remain. The ongoing conversation at Cannes highlights not only artistic achievement but the essential need for inclusivity and representation, paving the way for future generations of filmmakers.
