Nicolas Jackson’s impressive brace led Senegal to a commanding 3-0 victory against Botswana in their opening match of Group D at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Tangier.

Despite challenging weather conditions, with heavy rain affecting the players, the reigning champions dominated the game from the start. Botswana’s goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko was kept busy early on, making crucial saves to prevent Senegal from scoring through the likes of Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye.

The breakthrough came just five minutes before half-time when Jackson capitalized on a cross from Ismail Jakobs, finding the back of the net. He doubled his tally in the 58th minute with a confident finish inside the box. The victory was capped off late in the game by substitute Cherif Ndiaye, who added a third goal to solidify Senegal’s triumph.

This victory places Senegal at the top of Group D on goal difference, closely followed by DR Congo, who they will face in their upcoming match. Meanwhile, Botswana, still in search of their first-ever win in Africa’s prestigious tournament, will prepare to take on Benin in their next outing.

Senegal’s strong start not only highlights their potential to reclaim the title but also sets an exciting tone for the upcoming matches in the tournament.
