Former Flying Fijians first five-eighth Nicky Little recently visited the Fijian Drua’s headquarters in Legalega, Nadi, where he received a warm reception from the current squad and officials. Little expressed admiration for the modern facilities available to the Drua, reflecting on how he wished similar resources had been accessible during his playing days.
During his visit, he had a heartfelt reunion with fellow 2007 Rugby World Cup teammates Kele Leawere and Ifereimi Rawaqa, with whom he famously achieved a historic victory against Wales, winning 38-34. Little remarked, “This is amazing. I wish we had this when I was younger,” emphasizing the importance of team unity. He pointed out the contrast between the camaraderie of his past experiences, particularly in the Army barracks during the 1970s, and the supportive environment fostered by the current resources available to the Drua team.
Known for his kicking prowess, Little generously shared advice with the Drua fly-halves, emphasizing the importance of strategic gameplay, including advancing the ball from forwards to faster backs and making use of tactical kicking. He also highlighted the fundamental necessity of solid defense, stating, “And on defense, tackle your man. That’s it.”
Little underscored the critical need for local support for the Drua, praising the professionalism of local coaches who assist the team. His message ahead of the 2025 season resonated with pride for the players, as he asserted, “All our own guys are just proud to be the men who wear the blue.” He encouraged current athletes to give back to the rugby community, sharing their experiences and fostering connections with younger generations.
The Fijian Drua has been actively engaged in community-driven pre-season training, including outreach initiatives in locations like Kadavu. These efforts reinforce the club’s commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering a strong community spirit.
As they prepare for the upcoming Super Rugby season, the Drua’s emphasis on teamwork and community engagement provides a hopeful outlook for future successes. Little’s visit illustrates the enduring link between past and present players and reinforces the pivotal role of community and unity in shaping the future of Fijian rugby. Through such engagements, Little inspires current and future athletes, reminding them of the importance of collaboration and giving back to the sport.
