Former Flying Fijians first five-eighth Nicky Little recently visited the Fijian Drua headquarters in Legalega, Nadi, meeting with current team members and officials. During this heartwarming visit, Little expressed admiration for the advanced training facilities, wishing such resources had been available during his own playing years.
He had the opportunity to reunite with former teammates Kele Leawere and Ifereimi Rawaqa, both stars of the remarkable 2007 Rugby World Cup where Fiji clinched a memorable victory against Wales by a score of 38-34. Reflecting on the evolution of rugby in Fiji, Little emphasized the importance of unity, noting, “This is amazing. I wish we had this when I was younger,” as he compared the supportive atmosphere of the current team to the camaraderie of the Army barracks in the 1970s.
Known for his exceptional kicking ability, Little shared his insights with the Drua fly-halves, advising them on effective gameplay strategies, such as facilitating the ball’s transition from forwards to quicker backs and using kicks strategically. He also stressed the fundamental role of solid defense, stating simply, “And on defense, tackle your man. That’s it.”
Little highlighted the necessity of local support for the team, expressing confidence in the professionalism of local coaches like Rawaqa and Leawere. As he looked forward to the 2025 season, he conveyed a message of pride and encouragement for the current players, saying, “All our own guys are just proud to be the men who wear the blue.” He further encouraged players to give back to the rugby community, sharing the lessons learned throughout their careers.
The promotion of unity and community engagement is a hallmark of the Fijian Drua, demonstrated by their ongoing pre-season activities that include outreach in places like Kadavu. This approach not only strengthens team bonds but also reflects their commitment to nurturing local talent and reinforcing connections within the community.
In preparing for the upcoming Super Rugby season, the Drua’s focus on collaboration and local support creates a positive outlook for future successes. Nicky Little’s visit underscores the vital link between past and present players and highlights the spirit of rugby in Fiji, inspiring current and future generations of athletes toward collective growth and community connection.
