Former Flying Fijians first five-eighth Nicky Little recently visited the Fijian Drua’s headquarters in Legalega, Nadi, where he received a warm reception from the current squad and officials. During his visit, he expressed admiration for the state-of-the-art facilities available to the Drua, wishing such resources had been accessible during his own playing career.

Little took this opportunity to reconnect with former teammates Kele Leawere and Ifereimi Rawaqa, who were integral members of the 2007 Rugby World Cup team that made history by defeating Wales 38-34. Reflecting on the camaraderie of his playing days, Little noted, “This is amazing. I wish we had this when I was younger,” emphasizing the importance of unity among players today. He drew comparisons between the strong bonds formed in the 1970s, during his time in the Army barracks, to the present day boasting ample resources for team cohesion.

Recognized for his exceptional kicking skills, Little shared valuable insights with the Drua fly-halves, advising them on strategies for effective gameplay, such as transitioning the ball from forwards to faster backs and the strategic use of kicks. He also underscored the fundamental necessity of solid defense, stating succinctly, “And on defense, tackle your man. That’s it.”

Little highlighted the critical role of local support for the Drua and praised the professionalism of local coaches like Rawaqa and Leawere, stating they are well-equipped to guide the players. As he looked forward to the 2025 season, his heartfelt message was one of collective pride: “All our own guys are just proud to be the men who wear the blue.” He encouraged current players to give back to the rugby community, sharing their experiences with youth and aspiring athletes.

The Fijian Drua remains committed to fostering a sense of community, evidenced by their pre-season activities in places like Kadavu. These initiatives enhance team bonds while showcasing their dedication to developing local talent and supporting the community.

As the Drua prepares for the upcoming Super Rugby season, their focus on teamwork and local engagement offers a hopeful outlook for future successes. Little’s visit underscores the vital link between past and present players, reinforcing the spirit of rugby in Fiji and inspiring current and future generations of athletes to work collaboratively and give back to the sport that has shaped their lives.
