Former Flying Fijians first five-eighth Nicky Little recently visited the Fijian Drua’s base in Legalega, Nadi, where he received a warm welcome from the current squad and officials. During his visit, Little expressed admiration for the state-of-the-art facilities, stating that he wished such resources had been available when he played rugby.
Little took the opportunity to reconnect with former teammates Kele Leawere and Ifereimi Rawaqa, both of whom are remembered for their roles in Fiji’s historic win over Wales (38-34) during the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Reflecting on the significance of unity among players, he observed, “This is amazing. I wish we had this when I was younger,” further noting how the camaraderie he experienced during his earlier days in the Army barracks contrasted with today’s team environment that boasts ample resources.
Known for his exceptional kicking skills, Little shared valuable advice with the Drua fly-halves, urging them to effectively transition the ball from forwards to faster backs while also employing strategic kicks. He emphasized the necessity of solid defensive tactics, simply advising, “And on defense, tackle your man. That’s it.”
Furthermore, Little highlighted the critical need for local support for the Drua and praised the professionalism of local coaches like Rawaqa and Leawere, affirming their capability in guiding players effectively. As the Drua prepares for the upcoming 2025 season, he delivered a message of pride, stating, “All our own guys are just proud to be the men who wear the blue.” He encouraged current players to give back to the rugby community, sharing experiences and knowledge with younger athletes.
The Fijian Drua remains committed to nurturing local talent and fostering a sense of community, as evidenced by their pre-season training initiatives, including outreach programs in places like Kadavu. This ongoing community engagement not only enhances team dynamics but also reinforces their dedication to local development.
As the Drua gears up for the Super Rugby season, their focus on unity and community connections provides a fresh and hopeful outlook for future successes. Little’s visit not only strengthens the bond between past and present players but also underscores the importance of teamwork, support, and giving back, which are essential for inspiring future generations of athletes in Fiji.
