The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) has expressed strong disapproval of Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s treatment of independent opposition MP Aliki Bia, calling it “deeply troubling and disappointing.”
In a statement, the NGOCHR highlighted concerns raised by Mr. Bia regarding the well-being of the Melanesian community during parliamentary proceedings on September 6. Records from that day indicate that Ratu Naiqama remarked that many individuals from the Melanesian community were “not paying for anything.”
He mentioned that some individuals are registered in his village and clans but have been classified as descendants of Solomon Islanders. Ratu Naiqama argued that despite claims of mistreatment, these individuals are integrated into their society as voters, referencing efforts by the previous prime minister to support minority groups.
Ratu Naiqama further challenged Mr. Bia’s assertions of discrimination, noting that he has been offered a seat in Parliament. The NGOCHR criticized this attitude as indicative of the challenges faced by ethnic minorities when trying to voice their grievances.
The coalition condemned Ratu Naiqama’s racially charged remarks, asserting that they compromised his integrity as Speaker and perpetuated harmful rhetoric that could threaten social unity in Fiji.
The statement emphasized that such comments contradict national values of equality and inclusion, which Fiji has sought to uphold since its independence, and contribute to the systematic marginalization of the Melanesian community.
The NGOCHR called on Ratu Naiqama to reflect on the detrimental effects of his words and urged leaders to reject divisive rhetoric. It stressed that silence in response to such statements is unacceptable and highlighted the need for leaders who promote justice and unity to foster a truly inclusive society in Fiji.
