The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) has expressed strong concerns regarding the recent reshuffle in the Fijian government led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The organization criticized the deployment of additional ministers and assistant ministers, labeling the changes as arbitrary and lacking in transparency and accountability.
In a statement, NGOCHR voiced its outrage over what it perceives as reckless government expansion at a time when Fiji is facing significant financial strain, with the national debt surpassing $10 billion. They warned that the appointment of new roles could impose a heavy financial burden on the country’s economy.
The NGOCHR questioned the Prime Minister’s funding sources for these additional posts and stated, “Increasing operational costs in the face of economic fragility is a slap in the face to the hardworking people of Fiji.” The coalition demands answers from government officials, emphasizing that this reshuffle may reflect a desperate attempt to consolidate power ahead of the 2026 elections.
These sentiments echo previous criticisms from Opposition MPs, including Premila Kumar, who argued that the cabinet expansion contradicted pre-election promises to reduce government size. Kumar condemned Rabuka’s decisions as a bailout for ineffective ministers rather than a genuine effort to enhance governance.
Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has also criticized the move, calling it financially irresponsible and a potential misuse of public resources. He asserted that such decisions distract from addressing critical challenges, including high living costs and deteriorating public services.
While there is considerable discontent regarding the current government restructuring, the calls for greater accountability and transparency could pave the way for significant reforms. Many advocates for change believe that this situation might encourage the government to align more closely with the citizens’ needs, potentially leading to improved public services and a restored trust in governance.
The ongoing political discourse highlights an opportunity for the government to reassess its strategies and engage actively with the community to address pressing issues facing Fiji. With constructive dialogue, there is hope for a more effective and responsive leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the Fijian people.
