The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) has criticized Parliament Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for his “deeply troubling and disappointing” treatment of independent opposition MP Aliki Bia.
In a statement, NGOCHR noted that on September 6, Mr. Bia raised concerns regarding the well-being of the Melanesian community in Parliament. Records from Hansard indicate that Ratu Naiqama made comments suggesting that many individuals from the Melanesian group were “not paying for anything.” He elaborated on his statement by mentioning that some were registered in his village and referred to them as descendants of Solomon Islanders.
Ratu Naiqama challenged Mr. Bia’s claims of discrimination, asserting that despite the complaints of mistreatment, those individuals have been integrated into the society, even participating in elections.
The NGOCHR pointed out that such remarks illustrate the difficulties faced by ethnic minorities in Fiji when attempting to address injustices. They emphasized that the Speaker’s racially charged comments not only compromise his integrity but also contribute to the harmful discourse that endangers Fiji’s social harmony.
The coalition expressed its dismay over the Speaker’s comments and his disregard for critical matters raised in Parliament, viewing it as a violation of shared national values. They argued that such rhetoric undermines the principles of equality and inclusion, which Fiji has worked toward since its independence, thereby exacerbating the exclusion of the Melanesian community.
NGOCHR urged Ratu Naiqama to reconsider his behavior and the detrimental effects of his statements and actions. They declared that silence in the face of such divisive language is unacceptable and that leaders must actively reject discrimination in all its forms.
The organization concluded by stating that Fiji needs leaders who foster justice and unity, stressing that mutual respect and understanding are essential for achieving a truly inclusive and cohesive society.
