The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) has expressed concern regarding the behavior of Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu towards independent opposition MP Aliki Bia, describing it as “deeply troubling and disappointing.” In a statement, the NGOCHR highlighted that Mr. Bia raised issues about the welfare of the Melanesian community during a parliamentary session on September 6.
Records from that session indicate that Ratu Naiqama remarked that many individuals from the Melanesian community were “not paying for anything.” He claimed that some registered members were part of his village and other clans but had been categorized as descendants of Solomon Islanders. The Speaker further questioned Mr. Bia’s assertions of discrimination, pointing out that he is part of the electoral process in Fiji, facilitated by past administrations that aimed to support minority groups.
The NGOCHR emphasized that such attitudes illustrate the difficulties faced by ethnic minorities in Fiji when trying to address injustices. They criticized Ratu Naiqama’s remarks as racially charged and damaging, which they believe undermine his role and contribute to harmful narratives that jeopardize social harmony in the country.
They expressed disappointment over the Speaker’s comments and his dismissal of serious issues brought up by Mr. Bia, stating that this undermines national values and the ideals of equality and inclusion that Fiji strives for. The NGOCHR called on Ratu Naiqama to reconsider his actions and their negative impact, urging leaders to oppose any form of discrimination.
The coalition emphasized that inaction against such divisive discourse is unacceptable and can further marginalize communities, weakening the principles of democracy and justice in Fiji. They advocate for leadership that fosters justice and unity, arguing that only through respect and understanding can a truly inclusive and cohesive society be achieved.
