The National Federation Party (NFP) has urged Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) to reconsider their proposed increase in electricity tariffs. NFP President Parmod Chand argues that there is no justification for raising electricity prices across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, and the party has formally communicated its stance to the FCCC.

Chand pointed out that the proposed hike, which was approved by the FCCC based on EFL’s submission back in May 2025, has triggered significant public backlash. He raised concerns about the legitimacy of the current public consultations, with many Fijians casting doubt on their authenticity. Furthermore, he disputes EFL’s assertion that 99,000 residential consumers would not be impacted by the increase, labeling that statement as unreasonable.

“The primary goal must always be to protect Fijians from unfair price hikes, safeguard businesses, and encourage investment,” Chand emphasized. He noted that retracting the tariff increase aligns with the Coalition Government’s objectives of enhancing incomes, lowering inflation, and fostering investment since its establishment. Key government initiatives include financial support for households that consume 100 kWh or less monthly and earn a combined income of $30,000 or less annually, aimed at easing the cost of living.

Chand cautioned that even those households not directly impacted by the tariff hike may experience higher costs as businesses are likely to transfer increased prices to consumers. While he acknowledged the importance of investing in energy security and sustainability, he asserted that such efforts must not be disproportionate to the broader economic and social implications for the populace.

In concluding his remarks, Chand called upon EFL and the FCCC to maintain ongoing discussions with the government and relevant stakeholders. He advocated for the exploration of innovative financing solutions, ensuring that any changes to electricity tariffs are equitable and considerate of the needs of all Fijians.
