NFP President’s Bold Remarks on Chaudhry’s Legacy

The president of the National Federation Party, Parmod Chand, has labeled Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry as a “self-professed champion of the poor.” This remark came in response to Chaudhry’s criticisms of the coalition government during the Fiji Labour Party’s Annual Delegates Conference in Nadi. Chaudhry accused the government of being self-serving and lacking in integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Chand pointed out Chaudhry’s previous tenure as the unelected Finance Minister under Frank Bainimarama’s regime following the 2006 coup, highlighting that he once suggested the public should accept the high prices of essential food items. He argued that over the past 23 months, the coalition government has been focused on restoring genuine democracy, as well as accountability and good governance, which were undermined during Chaudhry’s own association with Bainimarama’s regime.

Chand concluded by suggesting that Chaudhry is out of touch with reality.

In the context of Fiji’s political landscape, this exchange underscores the ongoing tension between rival political parties and their differing views on governance and accountability. While criticism persists, the current government’s efforts towards democratic reforms and good governance offer a glimmer of hope for a more stable and transparent political environment in the future.

Overall, the discourse reflects the broader challenges and dynamics within Fiji’s political system, with both parties likely to continue vying for public support.
