Biman Prasad, the leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) and Minister for Finance, has announced his intention to run in the upcoming 2026 General Election. With more than two years until the election, Prasad emphasized his commitment to engaging women and youth in order to strengthen the party’s base.
Prasad stated, “I will,” and shared insights on the party’s current position. He noted that the government has been in place for nearly two years and that the elections could take place anytime after three years, which means there is effectively 18 months left.
He highlighted the NFP’s organization and the strength of its 61-year-old constitution. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to multiracialism, making it clear that it is not based on race but rather on the desire for a collaborative government that promotes unity and inclusiveness. Prasad pointed out the diversity among the party’s supporters, with five members currently serving in Parliament and active participation from the iTaukei community.
During the party’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere, the NFP re-elected all office bearers unopposed. Labasa businessman Parmod Chand will continue as president, supported by vice presidents Devendra Naidu, Kamala Lajendra, Ratu Esava Nabuta, Peter Saunivalu, Waisale Kanavu, and Vijay Rajnesh Prasad. Chandu Lodhia remains treasurer, Kamal Iyer continues as general secretary, and Bimal Prasad serves as assistant general secretary.
Prasad expressed satisfaction with the members and the government’s progress, reminding party supporters of the vision set forth by the late Jayaram Reddy. He remarked that the vision established in 1999 is still alive and evolving. While acknowledging that mistakes and allegations of corruption are common in governance worldwide, Prasad urged his party and supporters to remain focused on building a better future for the country over the next two decades.
