National Federation Party (NFP) leader Professor Biman Prasad has dismissed rumors regarding an imminent Cabinet reshuffle, asserting that the NFP remains a vital and stable ally within the People’s Coalition Government. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance emphasized the party’s commitment to fulfilling its promises and prioritizing the nation’s development.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka previously indicated to the media that a reshuffle is anticipated as the coalition approaches the midpoint of its governmental term, describing it as an opportune time for changes.
In a response to inquiries from The Fiji Times, Professor Prasad reaffirmed the NFP’s loyalty to the coalition and stressed the importance of extending their political partnership beyond the 2026 elections. He highlighted the coalition’s accomplishments over the past two years, notably regarding the National Development Plan (NDP), which he views as a crucial element of the Government’s initiatives.
“The NDP is a significant milestone for the Coalition Government. Its outlined three-year and five-year plans detail our strategy for achieving essential development goals, such as enhancing water supply, road networks, drainage systems, and improving health and education infrastructure, much of which is already underway,” he stated.
Professor Prasad stressed the successful macroeconomic management that has positioned Fiji on a sustainable growth trajectory, with a current economy growth rate of 3.8 percent, slowing inflation, and increasing investments. He pointed out the reduction of the debt-to-GDP ratio from 90 percent to 78 percent, indicating enhanced fiscal stability, alongside a booming tourism sector, rising income levels, and improved living standards.
Several government initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable populations and enhancing services were outlined, such as an upcoming increase in the national minimum wage to $5 per hour by April 2025, financial support for farmers, salary increases for civil servants, education debt relief for families, pension restoration, increased social welfare allowances, and the removal of VAT on essential items.
The optimism conveyed in Professor Prasad’s statements suggests a focus not only on maintaining political stability but also on the continued effort toward economic recovery and enhancement of living standards for all citizens.
