The National Fire Authority (NFA) is reinforcing its dedication to providing ongoing financial assistance to the families of fallen firefighters through a compassionate policy aimed at supporting those affected by loss. This initiative offers essential financial aid to the families of firefighters who lose their lives while in service to the NFA.
As part of this policy, NFA’s medical insurer grants a $10,000 benefit to the next of kin of any firefighter who dies in the line of duty. This was recently emphasized when NFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane, presented a Term Life benefit of $10,000 to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of qualified firefighter Peceli Maisuva. Mr. Maisuva, who served at the Levuka Fire Station, passed away in October after a brief illness while actively working.
During the presentation, Mr. Sowane expressed pride in the courage and commitment displayed by firefighters daily. He stated, “This policy is one way we can express our gratitude for their service and ensure that their families are supported during such challenging times.”
The initiative, which was launched in 2022 following the tragic loss of a firefighter, has since provided crucial financial relief to the families of those who have fallen in the line of duty. Remarkably, the programme has benefited the families of three additional firefighters who lost their lives while serving. In 2023 alone, two firefighters tragically passed away while working with the authority, and so far in 2024, four more have succumbed, with each family receiving the $10,000 benefit. Overall, the NFA has distributed a total of $70,000 through this policy to date.
Mr. Sowane noted, “This initiative reflects NFA’s ongoing investment in honouring the service and sacrifice of our firefighters. We remain committed to standing by our staff and their families, recognising their invaluable contributions to both the organisation and the communities they protect.”
This commitment signifies a supportive network for the families of those who serve bravely, reinforcing the importance of community and resilience in the face of tragedy. It illustrates how organizations can take meaningful actions to honor their employees and provide for their loved ones, maintaining dignity during difficult times.
The NFA’s proactive approach highlights a strong sense of responsibility and care towards its members and their families, ensuring they are not alone during times of sorrow.
