The National Fire Authority (NFA) is reinforcing its dedication to supporting the families of firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving. This assistance comes through a compassionate policy designed to provide essential financial aid to the families of those who lose their lives in the line of duty.

As part of this initiative, the NFA’s medical insurer offers a $10,000 benefit to the next of kin of any firefighter who dies while serving. This commitment was recently underscored when NFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane, presented a Term Life benefit of $10,000 to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of firefighter Peceli Maisuva, who passed away in October after a brief illness while serving at the Levuka Fire Station.

During the handover, Mr. Sowane expressed deep pride in the courage and dedication demonstrated by firefighters daily. He emphasized that this policy is a meaningful way to show gratitude for their service and to ensure that families receive the support they need during difficult times.

Since the inception of this initiative in 2022, which was established following the tragic loss of a firefighter, the NFA has already provided crucial financial support to the families of four fallen firefighters, with two fatalities occurring in 2023 and four in 2024. To date, a total of $70,000 has been distributed through this policy, highlighting NFA’s ongoing commitment to honor the courage and sacrifice of their personnel.

Mr. Sowane reiterated the NFA’s pledge to remain steadfast in supporting their staff and their families, recognizing the significant role they play in serving both the organization and the communities they protect.

This initiative reflects not only a compassionate response to tragedy but also the deep appreciation the NFA has for those who dedicate their lives to public safety. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of loss, support and solidarity among community members can lead to a more hopeful future.
