The National Fire Authority (NFA) has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the families of deceased firefighters through its compassionate policy. This initiative is vital for families who lose loved ones in the line of duty while serving with the NFA. The policy includes a $10,000 benefit provided by the NFA’s medical insurer to the next of kin of any firefighter who tragically dies in service.

This commitment was underscored recently when NFA’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane, presented a Term Life benefit of $10,000 to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of firefighter Peceli Maisuva, who passed away after a brief illness while on duty at the Levuka Fire Station in October.

Mr. Sowane emphasized the bravery and dedication of firefighters, stating, “This policy is one way we can express our gratitude for their service and ensure that their families are supported during such challenging times.”

Since its inception in 2022, following the loss of a firefighter, the initiative has provided critical financial assistance to the bereaved families of four firefighters who lost their lives in 2024 alone, amounting to a total of $70,000 distributed to date.

Mr. Sowane remarked on the importance of this program, noting, “This initiative reflects NFA’s ongoing investment in honouring the service and sacrifice of our firefighters. We remain committed to standing by our staff and their families, recognising their invaluable contributions to both the organisation and the communities they protect.”
