The National Fire Authority (NFA) has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the families of firefighters who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty through its compassionate policy. This initiative plays a vital role in providing financial assistance to the loved ones of those who serve the NFA.
Under the policy, the NFA’s medical insurance offers a $10,000 benefit to the next of kin of any firefighter who dies while actively serving. Recently, NFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane, presented this benefit to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of firefighter Peceli Maisuva, who passed away in October due to a short illness while on duty at the Levuka Fire Station.
During the benefit handover, Mr. Sowane expressed pride in the bravery and commitment displayed by firefighters on a daily basis. He emphasized that this policy is a way to show gratitude for their service and to provide support to families during difficult times.
Launched in 2022 after the loss of a firefighter, this initiative has offered significant financial support to the families of fallen personnel. In the past year alone, two firefighters have died while in service, and four additional firefighters have lost their lives so far in 2024. Each family affected has received the $10,000 benefit, contributing to a total of $70,000 distributed through the program thus far.
“This initiative demonstrates NFA’s ongoing commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of our firefighters,” Mr. Sowane remarked. “We stand by our staff and their families, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to both our organization and the communities they protect.”
This compassionate policy not only provides financial relief but also reinforces the deep respect and recognition for the dedicated service of firefighters, helping to ensure that their families have some support in their time of need.
This article highlights the importance of community and organizational support during challenging times, underscoring the value of honoring those who selflessly serve and protect. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by firefighters and the vital role they play in safeguarding public safety.
