The National Fire Authority (NFA) continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to supporting the families of firefighters who have tragically lost their lives while serving. Through its compassionate policy, the NFA provides essential financial aid to next of kin in such difficult times.
The policy guarantees a benefit of $10,000 from the NFA’s medical insurer to the relatives of any firefighter who dies in the line of duty. This was recently illustrated when NFA’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane, presented this benefit to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of firefighter Peceli Maisuva, who passed away in October after a brief illness while on duty at the Levuka Fire Station.
During the benefit handover, Mr. Sowane expressed pride in the courage and dedication shown by firefighters and emphasized that this policy is a significant way to honor their sacrifices. “We are immensely proud of the bravery and dedication shown by our firefighters every day. This policy is one way we can express our gratitude for their service and ensure that their families are supported during such challenging times,” he stated.
Initiated in 2022 following the loss of a firefighter, the program has offered vital financial assistance to four families of fallen firefighters in 2023 alone, and it has extended support to two more families in 2024. The total amount distributed under this initiative amounts to $70,000 thus far.
Mr. Sowane reaffirmed the NFA’s dedication to honoring the service of its firefighters, stating, “This initiative reflects NFA’s ongoing investment in honouring the service and sacrifice of our firefighters. We remain committed to standing by our staff and their families, recognizing their invaluable contributions to both the organization and the communities they protect.”
This compassionate initiative showcases the NFA’s deep respect and commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families, ensuring that they receive necessary support in the wake of such tragedies. By providing timely assistance, the NFA helps ease the burden on bereaved families, demonstrating that even during the toughest times, their sacrifices will not go unrecognized.
Overall, this policy is a beacon of hope for the families of fallen firefighters and underscores the importance of community support and solidarity during times of grief.
