The National Fire Authority (NFA) is anticipating an increase in its budget allocation for the 2025-2026 fiscal year to support its expanding operations and new projects. CEO Puamau Sowane announced that the authority has submitted its capital and operational budgets and is now awaiting government approval.
Sowane expressed optimism that the government will uphold its commitment to provide the mandated 25 percent operational funding, a support level that the NFA has consistently received in recent years. He noted that any potential increase in funding would be crucial as growing demands on the NFA’s services are driving costs upward.
Among the developments driving these costs is the introduction of a new building permit application system requiring necessary system upgrades, along with plans to establish a new fire station in Natadola, projected to open in November. This new station is particularly vital given the region’s history of rising fire incidents and road accidents—over the past six years, there have been more than 200 structural fires resulting in significant damages.
The NFA’s budget from the previous financial year was set at $6.1 million, and these anticipated expansions reflect a proactive step towards improving both fire safety and emergency response capabilities, ensuring that the community receives the necessary support during emergencies.
The article underscores the importance of continuous investment and government support in enhancing overall public safety and fire services across Fiji. As the NFA expands its operations, there is hope for a future where fire safety measures are not only advanced but also accessible to all regions, thereby fostering safer communities.
