The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its new Paramedics Ambulance Department, marking a significant step forward in emergency medical services. During a ceremony held at their headquarters in Suva, the NFA badged new paramedics, highlighting the organization’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities in medical emergencies.

According to NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane, the previously existing ambulance services were managed by operational officers, which unfortunately led to ineffective use of government funding due to a lack of thorough oversight. The newly established department is focused on training more professionals to better respond to medical emergencies.

Sowane emphasized the importance of this new department, noting that it has its own dedicated manager for paramedics, and a portion of the fire station is being renovated to create a specialized center for paramedics. While specialized paramedics are not yet fully integrated, some firefighters have received training in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

The Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department is designed to provide essential care to victims and firefighters involved in incidents. Sowane explained that paramedics will be on standby at fire scenes to assist both affected individuals and firefighters.

Currently, the NFA operates nine ambulances and plans to introduce six additional paramedic ambulances to improve their services. These new ambulances are designed not only for patient transport but also equipped with advanced pre-hospital emergency care features.

In conclusion, Sowane urged the public to exercise caution during the festive season in order to prevent fire incidents, underscoring the authority’s proactive approach to safety and medical care.

This development signifies a promising enhancement in the provision of emergency services, ensuring that victims and first responders receive immediate assistance when needed. As the NFA continues to build its capabilities, the community can feel more secure knowing that they have access to improved paramedic services.
