The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department, marked by the badging of new paramedics at the Suva headquarters. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane commented that the previous management of the ambulance services by operational officers lacked effective oversight, which led to mismanagement of government funds.
The new department aims to ensure better training for its professionals, enabling them to manage medical emergencies more effectively. “Establishing this department has been a priority for the NFA to enhance our operations,” Sowane remarked. He highlighted that the department will be led by a qualified manager and noted that a section of the fire station is being repurposed to house a new paramedic center. Although specialized paramedics are not yet in place, some firefighters have received training from the Ministry of Health.
The Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department is focused on assisting victims and firefighters during emergency situations. Sowane explained that paramedics will be ready to respond at incidents, providing crucial support to both fire victims and firefighters on the scene.
Currently, NFA operates nine ambulances but plans to introduce six more to improve service delivery. Although the cost of these specialist paramedic ambulances is significant, Sowane assures that they are designed not only for transportation but also equipped with essential pre-hospital care facilities.
In his closing appeal, Sowane urged the community to exercise caution during the festive season to prevent fire incidents.
This strategic move by the NFA represents a significant enhancement in emergency medical services, ensuring prompt and professional care during critical situations for both the public and firefighters, reinforcing the NFA’s commitment to community safety.
Overall, the establishment of the Paramedics Ambulance Department shows a proactive approach to improving emergency services, which is a positive development for public health and safety.
