The National Fire Authority (NFA) is actively working to increase female representation in its workforce, tackling ongoing infrastructure and workplace challenges that have historically defined this male-dominated sector.

Acting Chief Executive Joel Israel has emphasized the authority’s open merit policy, which has led to a notable increase in female staff across various levels within the organization. In a commitment to creating a more inclusive environment, the NFA has undertaken significant infrastructure upgrades. These enhancements include the addition of separate female restrooms and dormitories at fire stations in Navua, Lami, and Nakasi, along with the development of new stations designed with female-friendly utilities.

Israel pointed out that these improvements are part of a larger transformation observed over the last five to ten years, which has aimed at achieving a balanced gender representation in both operational and corporate roles. The nearly equal staffing ratio in corporate services, now approaching 50-50, reflects this commitment.

He stated, “So we are also recognizing their contribution to NFA into the holistic firefighting agenda and also providing safety to people’s lives and also saving property.” These initiatives are not only about increasing numbers but also about fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace culture that encourages women to pursue careers in emergency services.

This progressive approach is encouraging, highlighting the NFA’s dedication to providing equal opportunities and acknowledging the important contributions of women in the firefighting profession. As the organization continues to evolve, it sets a hopeful precedent for other sectors looking to improve gender parity and inclusivity.
