Rupeni Caucaunibuca Junior has joined the academy of Montpellier HR, a prominent club in the French Top 14, as reported by the French newspaper Midi Olympique. At just 17 years old, Caucaunibuca Junior is already following in the footsteps of his father, Rupeni Caucaunibuca (Snr), a celebrated former Flying Fijian winger known for his exceptional skills on the field.
Caucaunibuca Snr had a remarkable career in the Top 14, playing for clubs such as Agen and Stade Toulousain, where he scored 65 tries in 108 appearances. He is fondly remembered for his contributions to the sport, particularly during his time with the Blues, where he helped clinch the Super Rugby title in 2003.
The younger Caucaunibuca has demonstrated significant athletic ability, having recently clocked 11.02 seconds in the 100 meters at the Fiji Finals while running for Naitasiri Secondary School (NSS). His impressive performance has attracted interest from both local and international rugby programs; in addition to Montpellier, clubs like Blues and Clermont have expressed a desire to recruit him for their academies.
In an earlier interview, Caucaunibuca Junior expressed his aspirations by stating, “I will try my best to reach where he (dad) left off or even better, and revive his name on the rugby field.” His father has been in discussions with various clubs regarding his son’s future, indicating a strong support system that aims to guide young Rupeni toward success.
Notably, Rupeni Junior’s talent was recognized by Naitasiri coach Rusiate Talebulamai, who spotted him during a prayer meeting, leading to his enrollment at NSS to play rugby and rugby league. The rising athlete has remained humble despite his accolades and is set to contribute to Fijian sports development, embodying the promise of the next generation of athletes.
Caucaunibuca Junior’s journey exemplifies hope for the future of rugby in Fiji, showcasing the potential of young athletes to achieve great heights while honoring their family legacies. His membership in Montpellier’s academy indicates a robust foundation for nurturing future talent, further demonstrating the growth of rugby as a crucial aspect of Fijian culture and identity.
