National Under-20 head coach Senirusi Seruvakula is set to finalize his squad of 30 players by the end of January. The team is gearing up for two significant tournaments scheduled to take place in New Zealand in March: the Oceania Championship and the Super U20 competition.
Seruvakula stated that most of the players selected for the extended squad were identified during the Vodafone Deans Trophy competition held last year. He also noted considerable interest from overseas-based players, with a few already participating in training sessions with the team.
“The two tournaments are our main priority,” Seruvakula emphasized. “We will compete as the national U20 team during the Oceania tournament and later represent the Drua U20 at the Super Rugby U20 competition.” He mentioned that the Oceania tournament will feature teams from Tonga, Samoa, and Moana Pasifika.
The team plans to depart at the end of February, with the Oceania tournament kicking off in the first week of March. After a brief rest of about three days following that event, they will head into their second tournament, which is expected to last about one and a half weeks.
To select the final squad members, Seruvakula and his coaching staff will hold open trials in Duva, Sigatoka, and Nadi on the upcoming Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
This season holds great promise for the national Under-20 team, with a blend of local talent and potential from overseas players, indicating a bright future ahead for Fiji’s rugby development.
