New Zealand’s U-16 Women Impress with 8-0 Championship Opener!

New Zealand began their defense of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship with a decisive 8-0 win over New Caledonia at HFC Bank Stadium. The Kiwis exhibited their skills from the outset, despite New Caledonia’s early attempts to gain footing in the match.

The scoring started in the fifth minute with Keira Tichbon finding the net after a well-executed play with Pia Vlok. Although New Caledonia came close to equalizing shortly after, their attempt was just off target, allowing New Zealand to maintain their lead.

Laura Bennett quickly added to the Kiwis’ advantage, scoring a rebound in the 12th minute. Grace Duncan then increased the margin with a precise shot, utilizing another assist from Vlok, who proved crucial throughout the first half.

Despite New Caledonia’s efforts, including a near miss from Kinë Hmaen who shot just over the crossbar, New Zealand remained in control. Bennett scored again by converting a cross from Vlok, solidifying their dominance.

The first half concluded with Tichbon and Duncan collaborating for another goal, bringing the score to 5-0 at halftime. New Caledonia, undeterred, continued to fight, as noted by a key goal-line save from Taylh Byers that denied them a potential goal.

In the second half, Bennett achieved her hat-trick and scored a fourth goal, skillfully navigating the opposition’s defense. The highlight of the match came from Duncan, who executed a fantastic free-kick that struck the top corner, finalizing the 8-0 scoreline.

This impressive victory establishes a high benchmark for the reigning champions as they seek to defend their title in the ongoing tournament.
