New Zealand’s impressive performance in the final Group B match of the FIFA World Cup 26 Oceania Qualifiers saw them defeat Samoa with a commanding score of 8-0, thanks to a remarkable hat-trick from star striker Chris Wood.
Samoa, ranked 186th in the FIFA World Rankings, faced a tough challenge against Darren Bazeley’s All Whites, who are currently placed 91st. Despite New Zealand’s dominance, Samoa initially showcased a strong and resilient defense. In the opening minutes, Marko Stamenic tested goalkeeper Pele Fatu three times with quick shots, each met by incredible saves.
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Callum McCowatt capitalized on a rebound from Fatu, scoring his fourth goal for New Zealand. Chris Wood followed shortly after, scoring his 39th and 40th international goals within 11 minutes before halftime, putting the All Whites firmly in control with a lead of 3-0.
After the break, New Zealand continued their relentless attack, with Wood netting his 41st goal soon after the restart. Marco Stamenic, Francis de Vries (who marked his first international goal), Elijah Just, and Ben Waine each found the back of the net, completing the rout with a penalty in injury time.
This impressive victory means New Zealand will advance to face Fiji in the semi-finals next March, while New Caledonia and Tahiti will clash in the other semi-final.
Overall, this match stands as a testament to New Zealand’s strength and rising potential in international football. The team’s performance not only highlights their talent but also gives fans reason to be optimistic about their upcoming matches and the prospect of further success on the world stage.
