New Zealand secured a 1-0 victory over the Solomon Islands in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship today. The Solomon Islands were looking for a win to boost their chances of advancing, facing a formidable New Zealand team that had already qualified for the semifinals with dominant wins over New Caledonia and Tahiti.
In the sweltering midday heat and with injuries affecting two of their regular players, New Zealand took an early lead. Piper O’Neill scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute with a powerful finish.
The Solomon Islands demonstrated resilience with midfielders Mikaela Bangalan and Natalie Young working hard to protect their defense against New Zealand’s attacks. Just before halftime, New Zealand nearly doubled their advantage, but goalkeeper Fiona Goroani made an impressive save to deny Derelle Avery after a threatening cross from Heidi Draay.
In the second half, New Zealand continued to create chances to add to their score, but they were unable to convert any more opportunities. With this win, New Zealand is set to face Tonga in the semifinals next week.
