The Fijian Government has announced the acquisition of an additional $5 million from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to bolster the Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund. This funding marks a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between Fiji and New Zealand aimed at enhancing climate resilience in the region.
The financial support is earmarked for Fiji’s community relocation program, which focuses on aiding vulnerable communities, such as Nabavatu, in safely and sustainably relocating after exploring all other climate adaptation options.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed gratitude for New Zealand’s steadfast support, recognizing it as instrumental for Pacific nations grappling with the harsh realities of climate change. He stated, “I thank the Government and people of New Zealand for their continued partnership with Fiji. This contribution reflects our shared commitment to Pacific resilience, climate leadership, and standing together in support of communities most affected by climate change.”
Rabuka reiterated New Zealand’s role as a trusted partner, highlighting that it was the first country to provide specific funding to the Trust Fund upon its establishment in 2020. He emphasized that the Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund, initiated in 2019, is designed to ensure the orderly, inclusive, and dignified relocation of communities at risk, underscoring that such measures will only be considered as a last resort.
This collaboration exemplifies how nations can work together to combat the challenges posed by climate change, providing hope for vulnerable communities facing uncertain futures. The proactive steps taken by both Fiji and New Zealand underline the importance of international partnership in addressing critical environmental issues.
