New Zealand Expands Seasonal Worker Program: What You Need to Know!

New Zealand will welcome 20,750 seasonal workers under the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Scheme for the 2024-2025 season, starting September 2. Currently, around 1,000 Fijians are part of the workforce under this scheme.

The coalition government announced that this influx of workers aims to bolster the country’s horticulture and viticulture sectors. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford emphasized the government’s commitment to increase the number of RSE workers over time, aligning with industry needs while also considering the availability of local workers and their accommodation.

Employers in New Zealand will be required to provide an average of 30 hours of work per week over a four-week period. Additionally, the temporary pause on rises in accommodation costs will come to an end. The stipulation requiring RSE workers to earn 10 percent above the minimum wage will only be applicable to those with experience, acknowledging their higher productivity.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters noted the essential role of the RSE scheme in fostering relationships within the Pacific and highlighted the significant benefits it brings to all parties involved.
