New Zealand secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Solomon Islands in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship. The Solomon Islands needed a win to enhance their chances of advancing, facing a strong New Zealand team that had already qualified for the semi-finals after convincing wins against New Caledonia and Tahiti.
Despite playing in challenging midday heat and dealing with injuries to two key players, New Zealand made an early impact. Piper O’Neill scored a powerful goal in the 11th minute, putting the Kiwis ahead.
The Solomon Islands fought valiantly, with midfielders Mikaela Bangalan and Natalie Young working hard to shield their defense and withstand the pressure. New Zealand came close to doubling their lead before halftime when Fiona Goroani made an impressive save to prevent a goal from Derelle Avery, following a threatening cross from Heidi Draay.
In the second half, New Zealand continued to create chances to extend their lead, but they were unable to capitalize. Next week, New Zealand will face Tonga in the semi-finals.
