New Zealand secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Solomon Islands in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship today. The Solomon Islands needed a win to enhance their chances of progressing, facing a tough opponent in New Zealand, who had already qualified for the semi-finals with previous convincing wins against New Caledonia and Tahiti.
Despite playing in the midday heat and missing two key players due to injuries, New Zealand managed to score early in the match. Piper O’Neill found the back of the net in the 11th minute with a strong finish. The Solomon Islands fought back valiantly, with midfielders Mikaela Bangalan and Natalie Young working hard to protect their defense under pressure.
New Zealand came close to increasing their lead before halftime, but goalkeeper Fiona Goroani thwarted a dangerous opportunity from Derelle Avery following a well-placed cross from Heidi Draay.
In the second half, New Zealand created several chances to extend their advantage but were unable to convert. The team is set to face Tonga in the semi-finals next week.
