New Zealand Dominates Again: Sixth Straight OFC U-16 Title!

New Zealand has claimed its sixth consecutive title at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship.

The highly anticipated final of the 2024 edition showcased two standout teams, both of which had scored the most goals in the tournament and had not conceded any. Samoa made history during this competition, while New Zealand faced the growing challenge of increasing pressure as the gap between them and the other teams in Oceania tightens, with many eager to see if anyone can dethrone them.

From the outset, both teams fought for control in the midfield. New Zealand’s captain, Katie Pugh, immediately made her mark by clashing with Breanna, while the dynamic Pia Vlok contributed to advancing New Zealand’s play and thwarting Samoa’s efforts.

New Zealand struck first, with Pugh scoring after connecting with a headed long free kick from Kara McGillivray. Pugh confidently found the net, marking Samoa’s first time trailing in the tournament.

Just before halftime, Vlok doubled the lead with a superb finish. Set up by Pugh outside the penalty area, Vlok took her time to line up her shot and coolly sent the ball past goalkeeper Margaret Fagasuisui Tuii, bringing the New Zealand bench to their feet.

At halftime, both coaches made tactical changes. Chang introduced Mikayla Afoa for Kealia Nansen, while Alana Gunn replaced goal scorer Pugh and Natalie Young with Kya Solomon and Piper O’Neill.

As the match proceeded, New Zealand sealed their victory with a third goal shortly before the hour mark.
