New Zealand has reasserted its commitment to enhancing cooperation with Fiji in crucial sectors such as defense, community development, and disaster response. During an event in Suva, New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Greg Andrews, emphasized the strong and enduring relationship that exists between the two nations, characterized by shared values, mutual trust, and a deep history of people-to-people connections.
Andrews pointed out that both countries have been collaborating closely in various areas, including housing, healthcare, and community development, which create opportunities for the Fijian populace. He noted, “Our relationship with Fiji feels natural because it is built on shared values and a strong sense of partnership.”
In addition to community initiatives, Andrews highlighted the defense cooperation between New Zealand and Fiji, where both nations have supported each other over the years through joint initiatives and regional security operations. His comments were made during a reception celebrating Waitangi Day, New Zealand’s national day, which was attended by Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, cabinet members, parliamentarians, and diplomats.
He also recognized Fiji’s pivotal role in supporting New Zealand during challenging times, including assistance following the devastating Christchurch earthquake in 2011. Such acts demonstrate the enduring friendship between the two countries and underscore the importance of regional solidarity in times of crisis.
